ACCORD Restoration President Provides
Emergency Restoration Checklist

-- Expert Shares Years of Experience to Help Property Owners --

BALTIMORE, MD. September 30, 2008 – The most effective way to restore your property after a fire, flood, storm or other disastrous event is to take action quickly.  The Emergency Restoration checklist from restoration expert Frank Nemshick, president of ACCORD Restoration (ACCORDrestoration.com), outlines what steps property owners can take to do just that.

To minimize damage to a property following any disaster event, Nemshick said that there are simple steps a property owner can take.

  • Contact your insurance agent: “First, immediately alert your insurance company. Insurance agents are partners during this stressful time and can guide property owners through the claims and clean-up process,” he said.

  • Snap a picture: Taking photos of the damage to the property, inside and out, prior to it being cleaned-up, boarded-up or demolished could be essential for insurance documentation purposes. But before entering the building, make sure the structure is sound.

  • Turn it off: Nemshick advised that, if safe, utilities should be shut down. Turning off the electric and water supplies as well as closing the main gas valve could avoid further damage to the property.

  • Move valuables to safety: Property owners should relocate all valuables to a safe and dry place. If there is standing water, removing it is imperative, as it will begin to produce potentially dangerous mold within 48 hours.

  • Cover it up: If conditions allow, broken windows and doors as well as damaged walls and roof areas should be covered with plywood or plastic sheeting.

  • Take a good look: A thorough inspection of the property with observations and comments recorded can speed up the restoration process when professionals arrive. Areas to pay particular attention to are: the roof and exterior for damaged or missing shingles, gutters or siding; areas where water may have infiltrated the house; insulation to confirm it is dry and undamaged; and foundation walls to make sure they are intact.

By taking these steps, a qualified clean-up/restoration professional can more quickly repair damage to a property.
